“Life is a game of inches” (said Al Pacino)

Patience is a virtue, apparently and success rarely comes quickly, says the quote.

Delayed gratification is something not common to modern life. We’re used to getting much of what we like, quite quickly. Information, shopping, thrills and spills.

Sometimes though there are things we want to experience that we have to work, not only hard for, but for long and tough for.

Might be a new project, or looking for work, or changing the way we are inside, saving for something we’d like, the list could go on.

The goal being in sight, but the journey and distance some way off.

Progress is important, as it helps to reassure us that are efforts are finally making a mark on life, and moving things forward.

But when progress is painfully slow, that can be frustrating. Frustration can murder dreams if you let it take root long enough.

Al Pacino, in ‘Any Given Sunday’ played a tough but world-weary football coach. In the movie, he makes a speech before an important game, inspiring his team to go out onto the pitch and fight to win.

It’s a great pep talk. Wouldn’t work everyday as it would annoy the hell out of you.

But, he says one thing that’s important:

“Life is a game of inches..the margin for error is so small…one half step too late or to early you don’t quite make it. One half second too slow or too fast
and you don’t quite catch it. The inches we need are everywhere around us.
They are in ever break of the game every minute, every second.”

Inch by inch. That’s how you’ve got to move forward sometimes.

No point be frustrated by what might seem like slow progress in life. Or wishing things were different.

They will be, one day. Maybe in your favour, if you keep you calm and cool, you’ll either reach a clear ground and be able to move forward quicker. Or if you keep your perspective an alternative solution may come to mind that helps you alter what you’re doing and usher in quicker progress.

Frustration might drain enthusiasm and motivation.

Life is sometimes about leaps and bounds, leaps of faith and defying bounds.

Other times its boring and mundane and very much about inches.

Inches. Embrace them.
